How does Melanotan II work?
Naturally occurring Alpha-melanocytes bind with the 5 melanocortin receptors in the body to produce different effects based on the type of receptor. This includes darkening of the hair and skin, stimulating secretions from the adrenal gland, controlling appetite and regulating energy, altering sexual behavior, and stimulating sweat glands. Melanotan II is a synthetic version of the alpha melanocytes which means it interacts with these receptors as well for the same regulatory effects.
Uses of Melanotan II
Melanotan II is used for the following:
- Tanning of the skin: This is perhaps the biggest effect of Melanotan II, it helps to give the skin a dark tan without the need to spend long hours in the sun. Melanotan II helps to produce melanin (the skin pigment that makes the skin darker) and it also prevents you from burning when exposed to the sun.
- Improves sexual health and erectile: Melanotan II is often recommended for men and women with erectile dysfunction. Due to its interaction with the MC-4R receptors, this peptide can help to improve sexual health.
- Reducing hunger:Melanotan II has a high tendency to reduce the body’s urge for food. It can also help cut down on fat intake. Research has been carried out to show that when Melanotan II is given to a mouse, it changes its feeding habit to eating less, and also withdraws from fatty foods.
- Regulation of blood sugar: Although leptin is the hormone mainly responsible for regulating blood sugar, some melanocortin receptors may also be involved as well. Melanotan II may interact with these receptors to produce similar effects as leptin in regulating blood sugar. This means this compound may help in the treatment and maintenance of diabetes.

It is dangerous to start the intake of Melanotan II with a high dosage. Hence, the first injection should be a very small dose. It usually starts with a 250 micrograms daily dosage to be used after dinner before heading to bed. You can use this dosage indefinitely if you want a low-dose regimen. After about 2-4 days, the dosage can be increased to 500mcg which is the standard dose. It is also possible to use up to 1mg, but this is quite high and it is not advisable.
Warning: Do not use more than 1mg of Melanotan per day, it is an overdose.

Although Melanotan is not on a controlled substance list, it is also not a prescription medication in places like the US, UK, and Australia.
